Life-like renderings and 3D modeling are great, but nothing beats a functional prototype, which is precisely what San Francisco-based Lit Motors has wheeled out in their C-1 self-balancing electric motorcycle. While it’s more two wheeled car than motorcycle, the unfinished metal exoskeleton and pod-like design gives the C-1 a futuristic post-apocalyptic look.
After years of research and development, their prototype is finally ready to begin road testing. The technology that allows the C-1 to remain upright is a series of electronically controlled gyroscopes. These gyroscopes adjust to the terrain while driving to allow the vehicle to maintain a perpendicular tilt from the ground. So even when you roll up to a stop light, the C-1 will remain on its wheels.
While a production model is probably a far way off, at least we know the concept works. For motorcycle enthusiasts in places with bad weather ( i.e. San Francisco), the C-1 could be the perfect solution.
